Iranian Firms Engaged in 88 Engineering Projects Abroad

TEHRAN Deputy Economic and Finance Minister Mohammad Mahdi Navab announced here Sunday that currently, Iranian companies have undertaken 88 foreign projects valued at $1.3 billion.
Speaking at a seminar on "Capabilities and Shortcomings of Engineering and Technical Services Export", he said that out of 88 project, 31 is being implemented by governmental agencies, 52 by non-governmental concerns while the rest are carried out as joint ventures.
The majority of the project include road, port, and bridges, construction, laying electricity transmission cables and building water distribution networks.
He said that the Iranian companies carried out 348 projects valued at $7.9 billion in the Second Five-Year Development Plan (March 1994-March 1999).
Navab, who is also the head of Investment and Economic and Technical Assistance Organization, added that in case the contractor commits part of its own capital to the project then the organization will also be prepared to enter into joint partnership with the contractor.
He added that 100 million dollars of banking credits has been set aside from oil revenues surplus to promote engineering and technical service exports in the Third Five-Year Development Plan (March 2000-March 2005).
Meanwhile, Head of the Foreign Ministry's Economic Studies Bureau Mohammad-Ali Sarmadirad said here Sunday that the Foreign Ministry would extend support to facilitate the export of technical-engineering services.
Sarmadirad told a seminar on capabilities and shortcomings of technical-engineering services export that Iranian ambassadors in various parts of the world are well aware of the need to support exporters of services and would provide them with necessary facilities for small projects.
"The Foreign Ministry will offer all necessary political support for exporters of technical-engineering services and the issue has seriously been followed by the Economic Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry for over two years,'' said Sarmadirad.
He said that recently, the ministry sent economic consultants to certain Iranian embassies abroad to pave the way for effective communications.
He stressed the need for strong links between exporters of technical-engineering services with the countries receiving the services.
